Superior Court Releases Data on Jury Trial Verdicts in Medical Malpractice, Slip-and-Fall, and Auto Accident Cases for 2013
The Superior Court of the District of Columbia recently released compilations of data regarding jury trial verdicts in medical malpractice, slip-and-fall, and auto accident cases for 2013 (i.e., January 1, 2013 through December 31, 2013). According to the compilations:
» There were eight jury trial verdicts in medical malpractice cases during 2013, two of which were for the plaintiff. One of the plaintiff verdicts was in the amount of $0. The other plaintiff verdict was in a case involving incompetent surgery and serious permanency of injury, and was in the amount of $650,000.
» There were six slip-and-fall jury trial verdicts during 2013, one of which was for the plaintiff. The plaintiff verdict was in a case involving soft tissue injury and no permanency of injury, and was in the amount of $5,000 (approximately).
» There were seventy-eight jury trial verdicts in auto accident cases during 2013. Forty-five of those verdicts were for the plaintiff. The highest verdict for a plaintiff was $1.9 million (approximately), and was in a case involving soft tissue injury, verifiable back and neck injury, and permanency of injury; the plaintiff’s last known demand was $100,000. Three additional plaintiff verdicts were relatively large and were in the amounts of $400,000, $455,000, and $784,000 (approximately). The remaining plaintiff verdicts were all within the range of $0 to $43,000.
